Does anyone have any carpet cleaning tips for a large house with 2 asthmatics ??
We recently moved to a big, draughty, victorian house, my eldest daughter and I are asthmatic and after two months of worsening symptoms are now looking to have the carpets cleaned with something other than my numatic george.
Does anyone have any tips that could help reduce our symptoms via the carpet cleaning. I am thinking of hiring a rug doctor machine. Would it be wiser to hire a specialist to come in? Only serious answers please – thank you to those who took the time to compile a helpful answer.

there are chemicals you can put on them to repel water and dust but they are not generaly on sale to the public in a quantity you would need. i do suggest regular cleaning with a rug doctor machine but this can be expensive, having a specialist cleaners can also be very expensive and some of the other suggestions like laminate floors are a reasonable idea but they can be expensive too. you could try a vacum cleaner that steams the carpets as dust mites die in extreame heat. regular steam cleaning can help reduce symptoms caused by house dust mite. you could also try using a de-humidifyer as well as these messures to help with the damp problem, for the draught problem use an old pair of tights and fill each leg up with old rags and use it as a draught excluder and this may help your asthma too.

If it is your home, then I might suggest getting rid of the carpet. Carpet catches a lot of dust and other allergens and it is very hard to remove them once they are there. Linoleum or hardwood flooring would be a better option along with smaller rugs that could be washed on a regular basis.
If it is not your home, then there are allergen filters that you could get to place around your house that would help. Also, changing the filters in all of the vents on a regular basis would help.

Call a carpet cleaning company and ask them to come to the house and give you an estimate and recommendations.
The problem with cleaning the existing carpet is that anything that has been spilled or otherwise dropped on the carpet is now living in the pad. So even cleaning the pad will probably not get rid of the allergens you are reacting to. The safest bet is to rip out all carpet and replace with hard surfaces. If the carpet is relatively new, you may be able to clean it, remove it from the floor, replace the pad with new, and restretch the carpet. If the carpet is older, it probably won't respond well to this treatment.
In a house like yours, which is probably drafty and a little cold you may not be willing to give up the warmth of carpet. If you are in a position to replace the carpet, look into non-allergenic pad and short pile or loop carpets. They tend to hold less dust, etc. Good luck.

I'm in an apartment with a new carpet and it's really trigger my asthma.
What I've done to help it is use baking soda on the carpets fairly frequently, and then vacuum it up after 10-20 minutes. The baking soda I use is specifically for carpets and scented with lavender which also gives a nice smell.
Although it isn't a complete cure, it is a good, cheap, and effective way to minimize the carpet's triggering effects.
Good luck!

When cleaning your carpets make sure and use a high powered machine. One that you rent. The lesser powered home models don't clean deeply enough.

I would reccomend removing the carpet and replacing with throw rugs that can be washed every few days. If that is not fesiable then get the carpet professionally cleaned and stay in a hotel until the cleaning fumes disapate. Then buy a steam cleaner and do the carpets every month with vinagar or other breath friendly chemicals. Also vacuum daily with to keep dust and dander levels low to prevent dust mites.

Don`t use any chemicals on the carpet it will make things worse, I used a steamer on my carpets that worked well, but I have had all new wooden flooring put down stairs and that has helped a lot and I just hoover the dust up, my hoover as a built in hepper filter.
but I would suggest you stopped eating anything with wheat in it or on it for a while and you will be amazed how good you will feel as I did, give it a go you have nothing to loose
Good luck.
